Image of the Day 1-21-12 Phantom Ranch At Night

What would a photo trip through Arizona be without a couple of pics from the Grand Canyon? John has a whole Grand Canyon area on his site. I hope to share a full week of them at some point in the future, but for now here is one of the amazing shots. Tomorrow’s image will also be from the Canyon.

When I say an image from the Grand Canyon, I REALLY mean it. John took this very cool night shot while staying in the Phantom Ranch resort village while hiking through the Grand Canyon. He used a flashlight to illuminated the foreground of the picture. As I previously mentioned I want to visit the Canyon again, and this picture tells me I better be prepared to go to the bottom of the Canyon this time because the views are stunning!

For those that don’t know what Phantom Ranch is, it is located at the bottom of the Canyon. It is about 4,800 feet lower than the South Rim (about 9 miles away), and 5800 feet lower than the North Rim (about 14 miles away). The only way in and out is down foot trails, either by hiking or mule, or by way of the Colorado River. There are two trail bridges near the Ranch that are the only Colorado River crossings for more than 200 miles.

Trivia Tidbit: Phantom Ranch is apparently one of only two places in the United States that still has its mail delivered via mule! The other is also in the Canyon, Supai, the capital of the Havasupai Indian Reservation.
