Images of the Day – May 11, 2010 – Tornadoes Rip Through Oklahoma
One ongoing concern if you live in Oklahoma is the ever present danger of tornadoes. Tornado season here technically runs from about February through November! I think Tornadoes are the weather event I fear and hate the most. There is no time to prepare for something like a tornado. Although meteorologists have and are making advances in the early warning methods and forecasts.
Yesterday some major storms ripped through Oklahoma, and other states. In Oklahoma quite a few tornadoes touched down. At least one of them was deadly. The death toll is officially at 2, but there were also 3 child who are in critical condition that were originally listed as deaths.
Here are some images we got from KJRH.com (our NBC local news channel, which I believe has the best weather) The first image is of a tornado that touched down and was rated as an EF1 tornado. It had winds of 110 MPH, tracked about 11 miles, and was about 1.4 miles in diameter! Yes, 1.4 miles in diameter! The town I grew up in, in New Jersey was listed at 1 square mile. Luckily we never got any tornadoes on the Jersey Shore.
